Some authors I work with tell me they write best under pressure. They believe that, but I’m not sure it’s true. The reason they think is probably more down to the fact that if they are under pressure then they have to write. And this is when they produce their best writing because it’s the only time they produce any writing.

Overall, I would say that it’s better not to write under pressure for several reasons. One, why add more stress to your life?

And two, if you are writing under pressure then you are probably up against a deadline. So, what you are writing now probably is going to be your main draft. That means you won’t have time to refine your ideas or improve your writing. That’s not good.

So, my advice is always to start early and work in bite-size chunks. I’ve almost always found that this produces better results.
